Secretariat Correspondent: The Fishing Directorate ban on fishing for Hilsha in open water sources comes into effect from early today.
Fisheries and Livestock decorate issued a notification in this regard.
According to notification, the ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of hilsa started from October 1 to protect safe spawning of hilsa.
The restriction will remain effective until October 22. Shoals of mother hilsa start swimming upstream from the sea towards the rivers weeks before the full moon in October (Ashwin in Bengali calendar) and they return to the sea after spawning.
If the fishermen or traders violate the ban, they have to face penalty up to Tk 5,000 with two years imprisonment.
