7 Gazipur mayoral aspirants’ nomination found legal

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: The Election Commission (EC) has found nomination papers of seven candidates as legal for the mayoral post of the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation polls (GCC) scheduled to be held on May 15.
Returning officer has also suspended nomination papers of two aspirants and rejected for one.
The information was revealed by office of the returning officer set up at Bangataj Auditorium in Gazipur town till Sunday noon, the first day of scrutinising nomination papers of the election.
Rezaul Islam, staff officer of returning officer of GCC polls, also Narayanganj port upazila election officer, confirmed the news.
He said, “A total of 10 aspirants submitted nomination papers for mayoral race in the election. Nomination papers of seven aspirants were found legal on Sunday, the very first day of scrutinising nomination papers.”
The aspirants whose nomination papers were legal are-- AL nominated Advocate Jahangir Alam, also general secretary of Gazipur City AL, BNP nominated Hassan Uddin Sarkar, also member of central BNP executive committee and former Gazipur District Council chairman, Rashedul Hasan Rana of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Independent candidates Sanaullah Miah (Jamaat) and Farid Ahmed.
The aspirants whose nomination papers were suspended are-- Maolana Fazlur Rahman of Islami Oikya Jote and Kazi Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB).
Besides, Independent candidate Afsar Uddin’s nomination paper has been rejected.
Meanwhile 87 candidates submitted nomination papers for 19 posts of female ward councilors and 294 for 57 posts of general ward councilors till Thursday, the last day of submitting nomination papers.
According to schedule announced for the election, the nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 15 and 16.
The last date for nomination withdrawal is April 23. Election symbols will be allocated for the candidates on April 24.
Number of total voters of GCC is 11,64, 425.
