AL gets permission for rally, why not BNP?

Senior Correspondent: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury raised a question over the role Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in allowing rallies in the city.

The BNP Standing Committee Member said, “Awami League got permission to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. Why is BNP not allowed?”

The BNP stalwart came up with the question while speaking at a programme at Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday noon.

He said, “BNP submitted a letter seeking permission for a rally nearly a week ago. But permission has not yet been given?”

“The party that is holding rally today (March 7), they have been announcing over it in Dhaka for 10 days. All roads were blocked. Banners and festoons are found everywhere across the capital,” he added.

He said, “Holding rally is a constitutional, democratic, political and citizen right. BNP is deprived of the right. Why is a party being deprived from its political right?”

It may be mentioned that BNP sought permission for holding rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on March 12, demanding release of its chairperson who was jailed for five years in a graft case. But the party has not yet got permission in this regard from the authorities concerned.

Earlier, BNP also sought permission for a public meeting, it was rejected too.

Amir Khasru said, “We announced for a public meeting at Khulna circuit house at March 10. PM held a conference there. We want the premises of the circuit house, but they did not allow. Later, we want Hadis Park. It is also yet not allowed.”

“We wanted permission for Laldighi ground on March 27. PM will attend a public meeting there on March 21. Awami League is holding three meetings there in a month. But we were not allowed,” he added.
