Action should be taken to stop irregularities, harassment

Mohammad Jibon, 28-years-old energetic youth who had a dream of better life with better payment. Dreaming a new life, he paid Tk 6 lakh to a local agent of an international syndicate. But, the human traffickers embezzled the whole amount of Mohammad.

Media reports revealed that following the cheat, Mohammad Jibon filed a case with Shahbagh police station. Later, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-3 submitted charge sheet against four human traffickers in the case.

The above mentioned story was a single example of irregularities and corruption on the way of manpower export abroad. Lot of similar incidents took place in the country. Human traffickers are taking million dollars cheating general people. The real picture of the victims and oppression of traffickers are highlighted in a recent research report of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

People who want to go abroad are paying Tk 3 to 12 lakh taka in three steps to get their visas.

Around 90 percent male migrant workers who are interested to go Singapore and six countries of Middle East, fell victim of corruption in 2016. Human traffickers laundered about Tk 5,234 crore in name of visa processing.

According to the government statistics, manpower export has increased. About 80 to 85 lakh Bangladeshi expatriates are working across the globe now. Besides, 757,731 people left the country in 2016. This is the highest number in last eight years. The rate of manpower export is now upward. Even, 155,472 people went abroad in first two months of the current year. It can be said that the expatriates is highest now. However, the irregularities and corruption have continued side by side manpower export. As a result, income from this sector or remittance has reduced than last year. Following the issue, Bangladesh Bank also expressed tension.

These incidents create tension in manpower export sector. Any irregularities in the highest earning sector of the country cannot be accepted. Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry handled the issue. The authority needs to think in this regard. Effective steps should be taken against the middlemen in this sector.

There is a lot of demand of Bangladeshi manpower in several countries. The workers from here are doing better in those countries and sending remittance to Bangladesh. Many of them are investing their money in the country. Side by side, the reserve is increasing due to the remittance. The authority concerned took lot of steps to cut the costs of expatriates during leaving the country. Several types of act and rules have been taken but now steps needed to implement those rules. The government has to take strict action to stop harassments.

The interest of foreign country-bound people should get priority to make a safe and risk free remittance sector. The authority should ensure safety of the expatriates so that they can send back money from there easily and legally.
