‘Army to be deployed in election if needed’

Staff Correspondent: Election Commissioner (EC) Rafiqul Islam said Army would be deployed during 11th general election if it is needed.

He told this to the reporters at his own office of the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Monday.

Rafiqul said, “We hope, if it is needed to deploy Army for any reason like to bring voters’ confidence on polls or to keep law and order situation under control, we will do it.”

Citing that Army was deployed in all elections before, he further said, “There is a matter of confidence that people think voting will be fair if Army is deployed. Sometimes Army was invited to realise this expectation only.”

“If Election Commission thinks that Army deployment is needed for providing assistance to forces under Home Ministry, they will be invited.”
