Senior Correspondent: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam is confident about winning Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls alone, without support of Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the political allies of the party.
He said, “BNP does not depend on any party for victory. The party alone is self-reliant to win the polls.”
In reply to a query, the BNP stalwart told this while speaking at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Friday afternoon.
He said, “BNP alone participated in the general election in 1991 and formed the government independently. So, BNP needs not to depend on any part to win election.”
“We make alliance with Jamaat for greater interest. We made coalition to set free the democracy from the clutch of the incumbent devil government,” he added.
He said, “An animal power has hung on our heads. We made the coalition to topple the dangerous government. Election is the second or third one. It has no effectiveness in local polls.”
When asked about Jamaat’s seeking support from BNP, Fakhrul said, “They can expect support as a member of coalition. We are not preventing anyone’s hope.”
