BNP leader Rafiqul arrested

Staff Correspondent: A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday evening arrested BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia from his Eskaton residence in Dhaka hours after a Dhaka court sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment.

ADC Golam Saklayen Shithil of DB (North Division) confirmed the matter.

Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court sentenced Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah to three-year jail in a graft case filed for amassing illegal wealth.

Judge Sheikh Golam Mahbub of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 passed the order denying a time petition filed by Rafiqul’s lawyer Golam Mostafa Khan to defer the verdict.

The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default of which he will have to serve three months more in jail.

The court issued arrest warrant against Rafiqul as he did not appear before it today (Tuesday) while delivering the verdict.

In 2001, the then Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a notice to submit his wealth statement.

But, he did not submit the statement. Later on January 15, 2004, the ACC official Liakat Hossain filed a case accusing Rafiqul with Uttara Police Station.

After investigation, the official submitted charge-sheet against Rafiqul on November 30.

Taking the charge-sheet into cognizance, the court started its trail on November 14, 2017.
