BNP seeks talks with PM on polls-time govt

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

Senior Correspondent: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party wants to hold a discussion with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over election-time government.

BNP will propose that the government form a ‘supporting government’ for holding the national election, Fakhrul said while briefing media at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Monday noon.

The party will soon specify how the outline of the ‘supporting government’ will be during the election-time government, the BNP leader added.

The BNP secretary general said in a bid to hold a fair election, neutrality of the election-time government is much more important rather than the election commission.

The BNP leader further said, “We'll definitely place a proposal on a cooperative-administration and urge the government to take initiatives for talks. We'll give the prime minister our proposal calling upon her to accept it. Otherwise, she'll have to shoulder all the responsibility for the emerging situation.”

Turning to the new Election Commission, he said the head of the Commission is not a capable and neutral person for the post.

“We've already cleared before people about the new CEC's political and personal positions. He's not that much qualified to be the CEC,” Fakhrul said.

In reply to a question, he said they will decide later whether their party will join the national election under the new EC. But we'll join local polls as we did in the past since it's an ongoing process.
