BNP to stage countrywide demo Sunday

Senior Correspondent: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced a countrywide demonstration programme for next Sunday protesting the arrest warrants issued against party Chairperson Khaleda Zia in two corruption cases.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Thursday.

A special court in Dhaka cancelled an ad interim bail of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and issued arrest warrants against her as she failed to appear before it by this afternoon in two graft cases.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008, with Ramna Police Station, accusing Khaleda, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that was received as grants for orphans.

On August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station, against four, including Khaleda, of raising funds for the trust from unknown sources through abuse of power.
