Staff Correspondent: Workers of Chunji Knit Ltd., a garment factory, staged a demonstration and formed human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city on Friday demanding payment of salary arrears and opening the factory.
Roy Romesh Chandra, former general secretary of Jatiya Sramik League and incumbent president of the United Federation of garments, also joined the human chain.
He said, “Chunji authorities issued a notice over shutting down the factory on January 13, giving assurance of payments in the following month. But, they have yet not paid the salary arrears. With this, they put the workers in helpless states and dangers. Now, they are living in inhumane conditions with their families.”
“It is certainly against the conventional labor laws. The factory authorities are violating human rights of the workers. We demand for immediate payment to the workers and opening the factory.”
Roy Romesh Chandra also urged the authorities concerned including Bangladesh government, Korean government, international buyers, BGMEA and BKMEA to take necessary steps in this regard.
Otherwise, he threatened to stage campaign in national and international arenas.
Nurul Islam, general secretary of the United Federation of garment workers, organizing secretary Sheheli Afroz Lovely and Rezaul Karim with its president Younus Ali in chair, among others, spoke at the human chain programme.
