Communication with 10 unions snapped as bridge collapses

Thakurgaon Correspondent: Senua Baily Bridge in Thakurgaon district collapsed on Friday evening when a coal-laden truck was crossing it, snapping communication with 10 unions of the district.

The bridge collapsed around 6:30pm, leaving Ainul Haque, 65, son of Dhan Mohammad of Borungoan area in the district, injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the bridge had been too hazardous due to lack of maintenance for years. The authority of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) earlier declared the bridge as risky for use. But the bridge collapsed today when a coal-laden truck was crossing it.

Kanteshwar Barman, LGED executive engineer in Thakurgaon, confirmed the matter.

The higher authority has been informed to repair the bridge soon. Immediate step will be taken to repair the bridge and hope the bridge will soon become fit for use, the LGED official said.

Thakurgaon deputy commissioner Abdul Awal has visited the spot soon after the incident.
