Constable run over by pickup van in N'ganj

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: An on duty police constable was killed when a pickup van ran over him on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Banglaket check-post in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Constable Mogol Hossain, 50, son of late Ahammad Ali, hailed from Saydabad area under Raipura Thana in Narsingdi upazila. He was appointed at Bhulta police outpost.

Bhulta police outpost in-charge Inspector Shahidul Islam said Mogol Hossain signaled a pickup van to stop at the Banglaket check-post in the upazila while he along with other policemen was performing his duty but the driver of the vehicle sped away ignoring the police signal and ran the constable over around 3:00am, leaving him dead on the spot.

Police are trying to detain the driver and the helper, he added.
