`Cosmic rays` text message `hoax` reappears again

Staff Correspondent: There have been rumors circulating that cosmic rays are entering Earth tonight so we need to switch off our phones, or put them away from us.

“Tonight 12:30am - 3:30am be sure to turn off the phone: Singapore TV has announced the news. Please read about it and take care of yourself. Tell your dear relatives and friends: This evening from 12:30am - 3:30 am, dangerous, high radiation, cosmic rays will pass close to the Earth. So please turn off your cell phone. Do not let your cell phone be close to your body, it may cause damage. Please check the Google NASA and BBC News. Forward this message to all you care for.”

The message above is clearly nothing more than just another ‘hoax’. This message has been circulating since 2008 and it suddenly reappeared today, 26 April 2015. Many people received text messages containing this false information and saw similar Facebook posts.

While contacted, Dr. Syed Mohammod Hossain, Chief Scientific Officer, Bangladesh Atomic Commission Establishment, said that this message is nothing but a rumor.

“Cosmic rays are always passing through the earth. And there is no possibility of increasing the amount of rays unless there is an explosion in the space. As no incident of explosion happened, so there is no truth behind the news. It’s totally a hoax,” Dr. Syed Mohammod Hossain told risingbd.com.

Searching on the internet, it was found that same kinds of hoax were circulated several times in the recent past through social media. So there is nothing to be worried over.
