DNCC, DSCC polls: Voting ends, ballots counting on

Staff Correspondent: Voting in the by-election to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and councilor posts in 26 new wards in the two city corporations ended on Thursday.

The voting started at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break.

Turnout of voters was low due to inclement weather this morning. However, the presence of voters increased gradually later.

Expressing satisfaction, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda pointed-out two reasons behind low voter turnout.

On the other hand, Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said that the by-poll in Dhaka North City Corporation and wards election in Dhaka South City took place peacefully.

Five candidates including Awami League (AL) nominated candidate Atiqul Islam contested for the mayoral post of DNCC.

The four other aspirants for the mayor post are – Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) Shafin Ahmed, National People’s Party’s (NPP) Anisur Rahman Dewan, People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Shahin Khan and independent candidate Abdur Rahim.
