Domestic help's death sparks demo in Banasree

Staff Correspondent: Death of a domestic help in the capital's Banasree area has sparked protest among locals.  It soon turned violent with vandalism.

The demonstrators locked into clashes with police and vandalised a vehicle during the protest. They also attacked on the employer Moeen Uddin's house and vandalised glasses of windows.

The deceased was identified as Laily alias Mariam, 25, who used to work as a maid at house 14, road 4 in Banasree.

According to sources, her employer Moeen Uddin took Laily, a part-time maid at his house, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and said she hanged herself.

However, relatives of the deceased alleged that it was not a case of suicide.



Shahnaz Begum, one of the relatives of the deceased, said Moeen Uddin took Laily to his house by the watchman of his house in the morning. After a while, she was rushed to DMCH where she succumbed.

Kazi Mainul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station, said household Moeen Uddin along with his watchman was brought to the police station for interrogation. However, no case was still filed in this connection.

"Being informed, we visited the spot. We will take legal steps after investigation if complaint is filed," he added.
