Don’t arrest Prothom Alo editor among 6, bail hearing Monday

The High Court has fixed Monday for the anticipatory bail hearing of six people including Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq came up with the order on Sunday.

The court also instructed law enforcement agencies not to arrest or harass them until the hearing of the anticipatory bail petition.

Earlier in the day, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque along with four others filed for an anticipatory bail petition with the High Court.

The other four petitioners who sought bail are: Shah Paran Tushar, Mahitul Alam Pavel, Kabir Bakul and Shuvashish Pramanik.

On January 16, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam issued an arrest warrant against 10 people, including Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and Deputy Editor Anisul Hoque, over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) student Nayeemul Abrar.

The eight others accused are: Kabir Bakul, Shuvashish Pramanik, Mahitul Alam, Shah Paran Tushar, Jasim Uddin, Mosharraf Hossain, Sujan and Kamrul Hawlader.

On November 1, Nayeemul Abrar, a grade nine non-residential student of DRMC, was electrocuted by a power generator on the school premises, during a program organized by Kishor Alo, a supplement of Prothom Alo for young readers. Anisul Hoque is the editor of Kishor Alo.

Nayeemul's father Md Mojibur Rahman later filed a case with the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque, accusing the organizers of negligence which led to his son's death.

He also alleged that the organizers took Nayeemul to Universal Medical College Hospital instead of the nearby Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

He accused Kishore Alo and the school authorities of concealing the information of Nayeemul's death and continuing the program despite the tragic incident.
