Dream now a visible reality

Padma Bridge is no longer a dream. It has now become a visible reality as the first span of the country’s dream multipurpose structure has been installed. The first span of the much-hyped Padma Bridge was installed at Zajira point of the Padma River on Saturday morning after beginning the construction two years ago. It is hoped that the bridge will be opened by 2018 connecting the capital Dhaka directly with the 21 districts of the country’s Southern and Western regions.

The 6.15-kilometre-long two-tier Padma Multipurpose Bridge is being constructed on the Padma River from Mawa in Munshiganj to Zajira in Shariatpur. The bridge will be 9 kilometeres long if its soil portion is included. Trains will run on the span that has been installed first and concrete platform will be made on it.

Around 47.5% work of over all construction has been completed. Around 49 percent work of the main bridge has been completed.  34 percent work of river management has been completed.  Around 98 percent work of connecting road in Zajira has already been completed. Besides, 100 per cent work service area-2 has been completed. It is expected that construction work of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be completed by November in 2018.

“With the installation of the first span, Padma Bridge has become visible amid the dark clouds,” Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said about the auspicious event. Expressing his feelings on the great occasion, the minister said, “Padma Bridge is no longer a colourful dream; it is now a reality and has become visible to the world.”  Quader also said installation of the span will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after her return from the US. A festive mood is now prevailing in the area after the Padma Bridge becomes visible.

When Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina firmly declared that the Padma Bridge would be constructed by own fund, this declaration deemed 'high ambitious' to many. After the inauguration of work of river management at Zajira in 2015, the prime minister said, "The people of Bangladesh have learnt to pass over a mentality to seek help from foreign countries when the country undertakes a major work."

Actually, the prime minister took a right decision in right time. We expect that our dream bridge will be made public for vehicular movement within the stipulated time. We think the Padma River project is not only for infrastructural development. Through the construction of the bridge, we have proved that we can also do without foreign aid. This bridge will remain as a unique milestone on way to communication, economy and development of the country.
