‘Drug trader’ killed in Mymensingh ‘gunfight’

Mymensingh Correspondent:  A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with DB police at Bhaluka upazila early Saturday.

The gunfight took place around 2.15am in South Hobirbari area.

The deceased was identified as Rubel Mia, 31, son of Mujibur Rahman at Jamirdia village of the upazila.

Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch, Bhaluka upazila; said acting on a tip off that a group of drug peddlers gathered in the area and two teams of DB police conducted a drive there. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, drug peddlers opened fire, forcing them to fire back in self-defense that triggered a gunfight, the OC said.

Police rescued Rubel with bullet injury from the spot and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead, he added.

Police also recovered 200 Yaba pills and 100 gram heroin from the spot.

He was wanted in more than seven cases, he said.
