EC files appeal against HC stay on DNCC mayoral poll

Staff Correspondent: The Election Commission (EC) has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court to strike down the High Court order staying the Dhaka North City Corporation Mayoral by-polls and elections to 36 new wards in two city corporations in the capital.
EC Counsel Towhidul Islam, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the appeal petition with the Appellate Division on Thursday.
The court on January 17 stayed DNCC mayoral race and polls of 18 new wards for six months. It also stayed councilor race in 18 wards of Dhaka South City Corporation for four months.
The EC on January 9 declared polls schedule of the city corporations and fixed February 26 for exercising voting rights by city dwellers.
