Eerie calm at Dhanmondi

Staff Correspondent: An eerie silence is prevailing at the capital’s Dhanmondi, Jigatala and Science Laboratory areas after a clash between a group of youths and the protesting students, who took the street demanding safe roads.

The chase and counter chase took place at the area on Saturday noon, causing several wounded who took treatment at different hospitals of the area.

Our Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) correspondent reports that two injured were taken to the hospital.

Witness sources said local student leaders urged the agitating students to go back home. But the students ruled out their call and declared to continue the movement until their nine-point demands are met.

Amid the situation, an incident of hurling brick chips took place at the political office of the ruling Awami League (AL) president. Law enforcers also fire tear shells to disperse the attackers and to bring the situation under control, according to the sources.

During the clash, students took position in front of the headquarters of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) while the police and pro-government men at Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital area. Sounds of firing were also heard during the clash.

Meanwhile, students started to return home after the sun set. But an eerie calm was prevailing in the area while the report was filed. Some of the students were also seen in front of City College.

According to the agitating students, BCL leaders and activists made attacks on them behind the law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, no authentic sources could confirm over the news of death of an agitating student in the clash. But several students were found wounded, according to hospital sources.

The wounded students were admitted to different local hospitals including Popular Diagnostic Centre and Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.

On July 29 (Sunday), Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, students of the college section of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College, were killed as a Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus (Dhaka Metro B 11-9297) ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in the capital.

The incident triggered a strong demonstration across the country including the capital Dhaka.
