Road accidents after Eid: Awareness needed

After celebrating Eid festival with nearest and dearest ones, people are returning to their homes and work stations. The return journey starts after three days Eid vacation and couple of more days leave.

People were seen retuning just after Eid day but the main pressure started from Friday (September 8). The traffic pressure has been increased on roads and highways due to these people. Side-by-side, the number of road accidents has also been increased which is alarming.

People are dying in road crashes every day. Two major accidents took place in Gopalganj and Tangail. Six people were killed and 20 more injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Borashur area of Kashiani upazila on Saturday (September 9). Earlier on Thursday (September 7), nine people were killed and eight others injured in another road crash on Dhaka-Tangail highway.

The rate of road crashes is really alarming which increases during Eid festivals in Bangladesh. The recent statistics of causalities in road accidents just after Eid-ul-Azha create panic. A large number of people were injured in the accidents. Many of them will be disabled, some of them will lose working power and ultimately their lives will be a hell. It is painful for family, society and the state.

In general, the vehicle drivers are responsible for maximum road accidents. If the drivers remain alert then road accidents can be avoided. But, there is lack of chariness and responsibility among drivers. Vehicle owners, workers and concerned authorities also fail to show their responsibility as well.

There is a tendency between drivers and owners to earn more during Eid. As a result, drivers continue their driving without taking any rest. Sometimes, drivers run their vehicles too fast to save time. Lack of rest, additional passenger pressure, traffic jam, sound pollution and heat etc make the drivers disturbed. Consequently road crash takes place.

According to a research report of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), about 53 percent road crashes took place due to high speed on roads while rest 37 percent road crashes took place due to reckless driving mentality of drivers.

So, awareness and responsible mentality in drivers are needed first to reduce road accidents. A responsible driver never runs a faulty vehicle. If drivers drive their vehicle taking responsibility then speed limit will remain under control and road accidents will be reduced also.

The concerned authority in this regard should come forward. Massive campaign should be conducted to remain alert during Eid return journey. Besides, the law enforcement agencies have to play active role to control over speed vehicles on roads and highways. Strict surveillance and awareness must to stop death toll in roads. And those who are responsible behind road accidents should be punished.
