Eviction drive launched to revive Karnaphuli

Staff Correspondent, Chattogram: To revive the Karnaphuli river, considered Chattogram's lifeline, the district administration has started the much-expected demolition drive.

Executive magistrate Tahmilur Rahman began the drive on Monday morning.
On the first day of the eviction drive, the authorities demolished several hundreds of illegally constructed structures. 

Law enforcing agencies including RAB, Police and fire service men helped the district administration to conduct the drive.

Tahmilur Rahman said the authorities will continue the eviction drive until it is required to save the river.

He said the government is determined to restore all the other rivers and canals across the country by demolishing illegal structures.

Stern action would be taken against encroachers on the riverbanks and against all those who will prevent the programmme, he said.

“We have a list of illegal structures. Over 1000 illegal structures have been identified on both sides of the river”, he also said.
