Staff Correspondent: Detectives held two persons who were allegedly involved in collecting extortion in assurance of providing posts in the ruling party and nomination in the upcoming general election.
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP-East) held them from the capital’s Gopibag area on Thursday night.
The fraudsters were known as Mohammad Ali, 40, and his sister Nadia Sultana, 27.
Law enforcers also seized two mobile phones and several SIM cards from their possessions.
Police said they used to demand extortion from lawmakers, bureaucrats and businessmen in name of Abdus Sobhan Golap, office secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL).
Golap also works as one of the special secretaries of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
DB claimed that Ali and Nadia were held at red handed during extortion. They also gave confessional statement in preliminary interrogation.
Abdul Baten, additional commissioner (AC), said this in press briefing at DMP media centre on Friday noon.
He said, “The group used to make target businessmen and AL leaders from different posters and demand extortion in name of Abdus Sobhan Golap.”
