Facebook introduces mysterious rocket icon

Risingbd Desk: Facebook is constantly tinkering with its platform - you may have noticed it recently added Snapchat-style stories at the top.

The latest addition comes in the form of a small rocket icon that has been dropped in next to your friends and notification buttons.

Tap on it, and it takes you to an alternative news feed - giving you even more content to browse.

At the moment, only a few people seem to have the rocket ship appearing as Facebook has tentatively rolled it out to select iOS and Android users.

The second news feed displays pictures, articles and other posts from sources that you haven't explicitly followed. But, given what you do like, Facebook thinks you'd still be interested in seeing it.

It's a way of fighting back against the "filter bubble" mentality that continues to dominate Facebook.

Ultimately, the new feature could prove useful in breaking people away from being handed like-minded content. But at the moment, with only a staggered rollout, it appears to be causing more confusion than conversation.

“We are testing a complementary feed of popular articles, videos, and photos, customised for each person based on content that might be interesting to them," a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch .

"We’ve heard from people that they want an easy way to explore new content they haven’t connected with yet.”
