Fire Service man killed in militants' grenade attack

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi: A Fire Service man was killed in a grenade attack hurled by militants at Benipur village of the district's Godagarhi upazila on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Matin, 45. The incident took place around 7:50am.

Two cops were also injured in the incident. They were known as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Utpal Kumar and Constable Taizul Islam.

Hifzur Alam Munshi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Godagarhi Police Station, confirmed the news.

He said police cordoned off the house of Benipur village on suspicion of being militant den early Thursday. Since then, law enforcers keep urging the militants to surrender.

As they did not respond, fire service men started to spray water into the house. At one stage, militants hurled grenade at the law enforcers and fire service men, leaving two cops and a fire service men injured, he added.

The injured were taken to hospital immediately where fire service man Abdul Matin was declared dead, he said.

The OC said after the grenade attack, police started to fire at the militants, at one stage, four militants blew off themselves by explosion.

"Two children were rescued from the house and law enforcers cordoned off the house," he added.

Section 144 has been imposed a kilometer around the house, the OC said.
