Foundation plaque of Matarbari power plant unveiled

Risingbd Desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the foundation plaque of Matarbari 1200-megawatt coal-based power plant at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the plant through a videoconference from her official residence ‘Gonobhaban’ in the capital.

The ultra super critical coal-fired power plant on 1,414 acres of land at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar is expected to be completed by December in 2023.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing the project to construct Bangladesh’s largest power plant at Matarbari in Cox's Bazar. A total of 1,414 acres of land have been allocated in Moheshkhali’s Matarbari and Dhalghata Unions for the project. About 17 percent of construction work of the project has already been completed.

The government appointed a Japanese consortium, made up of Sumimoto Corporation, Toshhiba Corporation and IHI Corporation, as the contractor of the project.

Around 400 skilled workers are currently working for the Matarbari power plant project and 2,000 skilled workers more will join the project by turns, according to the experts.
