Gazette for new name of Environment and Forests Ministry

Secretariat Correspondent: The government has issued a gazette over changing the name of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The new name of the Ministry is the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

The gazette was officially issued on June 20.

Earlier on May 14, the name was approved by the cabinet at a meeting in the Secretariat presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Aug 6, 2017, the decision of the change was passed at 4th meeting of the National Environment Committee.

Bangladesh is one of the countries most at risk from the climate change.

Global warming is one of the biggest challenges for Bangladesh. Researchers believe that if it continues a large amount of land will be covered by water and approximately 2 billion people around the world could be displaced.

Since coming to power in 2009, the Awami League government has created two separate climate change alleviation funds.

The funds are named Bangladesh Climate Change Trust (BCCT) and Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF).
