Give special attention to patients: President

Staff Correspondent: President M Abdul Hamid said, "Patients are the guests of hospitals. Give your (physicians) special attention towards them so that they do not get hurt at the behaviour you are extending towards them."
"Consider the ability of people while providing treatment . . . make sure that no patient is deprived of getting proper treatment due to lack of money," the President said while addressing the third convocation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) at Shahbagh in the capital on Monday afternoon.
Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, categorically urged all concerned to perform their professional duty with the attitude of providing better services for the patients.
Citing print and electronic media reports, he said in some cases it is seen that people become the worst victims of wrong treatment or negligence of the physicians, tarnishing the reputation of the doctors and respective institutions. "You must be aware of this (wrong treatment)," he said.
Noting that medicine and treatment methods are being modernized day by day, he urged the physicians to be more knowledgeable with the latest invention and technologies to attain people's confidence in them the treatment facilities.
President Hamid also suggested introducing e-service using the modern information technology to reach treatment facilities to the people at the grassroots.
About the earning from Bangladesh's medicine export, Abdul Hamid urged medical scientists, physicians and researchers to uphold the image by putting continued efforts in this connection.
"The nature and type of diseases are different in respect of country and region. Besides, the diseases could be changed because of climate change," he said, adding that medical education and research will have to be conducted taking all these issues under consideration.
The President told the doctors to make people aware of how the deadly diseases such as cancer, heart ailment, AIDS can be prevented because the treatment of these diseases is very costly and time-consuming.
He also put emphasis on creating awareness about maintaining healthy life.
Congratulating the new graduates, President Hamid advised them to work for the country and its people.
"Patients are the guests of hospitals . . . Give special attention to the patients so that none gets hurt by your behaviour," the President said.
Referring to the role of nurses in treatment sector, he stressed the need for imparting them training and higher degrees at the BSMMU.
At the convocation, seven physicians were given PhD degree for their outstanding contribution in this sector while six students got gold medals for their outstanding academic results.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim, MP, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, Convocation Speaker Prof AHM Towhidul Anower Chowdhury , Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan and BSMMU Vice -Chancellor Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan also spoke.
Several lawmakers, senior academics, diplomats, senior physicians, secretaries concerned, high civil and military officials, among others, were present at the convocation.
