Govt for stopping inhuman punishment in rural arbitration

Parliament Correspondent: The government is taking steps to stop inhuman punishment in public during a rural arbitration, said Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq.

The minister said this in the Jatiya Sangsad while replying to a tabled question from ruling party parliament member Haji Rahim Ullah on Sunday afternoon.

The law minster said the government is taking steps to stop inhuman punishments like cutting down hairs of victim’s head, making victim to squat holding earlobes in the presence of people in the arbitration, forcing victim to take wreath of shoes in the neck, forcing victim to move around bazar after being beaten by broom and forcing victim to move after lying to the ground.

Such inhuman punishments are generally awarded to victims by rural arbitrators, member and chairman. The government is being aware of this so that such incidents cannot take place again, Anisul said.

The minister warned that action will be taken if allegation is found against those awarding such inhuman punishments to the victims.

While replying to another question from treasury bench member Nurunnabi Chowdhury, Anisul said the government has earned a revenue of Taka 105 crore 67 lakh 69 thousand and 589 from the country's district courts during the last fiscal year 2015-2016.
