‘Govt uses different agencies to split BNP’

Senior Correspondent: BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government wanted to divide BNP sending the party chairperson to jail. For this, the government used different agencies.

The BNP Standing Committee member came up with the comment while speaking at a discussion arranged by Khandaker Delwar Hossain Smriti Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the party’s former secretary general Delwar Hossain’s 7th death anniversary on Saturday.

BNP leader also alleged that the country is heading towards a ‘dark tunnel’ as the government has lost control over all institutions.

“The government cannot control plundering in banks. They’re also unable to put any offender on trial. In fact, it has lost control over everything as it destroyed the three basic pillars of the country. Bangladesh is now entering a dark tunnel,” he said.

Mosharraf said it cannot imagine in a democratic and civilised country the way the government is behaving with its opponents. “The government has come out with a true fascist face to hang onto power.”

Recalling Khandaker Delwar’s role in protecting BNP from various plots after 1/11 political changeover in 2007, he called upon their party followers to remain united to overcome the current political crisis following the example set by its former secretary general.

The BNP leader said it has now become clear to people that their chairperson Khaleda Zia has been sent to jail unfairly by the current government. “They (govt) thought BNP would get weakened if Khaleda Zia was sent to jail. But their plan has backfired as our party has got more united and stronger after our leader was put in jail.”

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Dhaka University ex-VC Prof Emajuddin Ahmed and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Zainul Abedin Farroque, among others, spoke at the programme.
