Govt’s subsidy expenditure declines

The government’s subsidy expenditure has declined more than double.

In the fiscal of 2017-18, the government spent Tk 63,101 crore in different sectors, which was Tk. 25,727 crore or 59 per cent lower than the previous year.

According to a finance department source, subsidy expenditure increased in the fiscal year 2017-2018 due to giving huge subsidy to the energy sector. At that time, subsidy expenditure increased as the government had to buy fuel at a higher price rate from foreign market and sell it at lower price in the local market.

Because of this, the subsidy expenditure in this sector was very high. At that time, subsidy in the energy sector was about Tk 10,000 crore. At the same time, the subsidy in the power sector increased.
