‘Gunfight’ kills drug trader in Gazipur

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: A drug kingpin was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Detective Branch (DB) of Police at Bhadun area of Pubail under Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) early Friday.
The deceased was identified Kamrul Islam Kamu, 32, son of late Siraj Khan alias Tamij Uddin of Tongi’s Ershadnagar area.
According to the district DB Police, acting on a tip off, a team of DB arrested Kamu along with 4,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and numberless private car conducting drive at Rayerdia area of the district’s Kaliganj upazila around 10:30pm on Thursday. A case was filed in this connection on the night.
But cohorts of Kamu fired at DB men while they reached Bhadun area on their way to take him to the office around 2:30am on Friday. Law enforcers also fired at them for self-defence. At one stage, Kamrul tried to flee from the vehicle of police when he received bullet by his cohorts. Later, he was rushed to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.
Assistant Inspector of Police (ASI) of DB Kader among three were injured in the incident. They were given treatment in the hospital, said DB Inspector Darik Stiphen Kuiya.
He said Kamrul was a notorious drug trader of the area. He was sued in at least 14 cases including drug and murder filed with Narayanganj and different police stations.
