HC rule on Jamaat men’s candidature

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the Election Commission (EC) why the candidacy of 25 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders will not be declared invalid.

A bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order on Thursday noon after hearing on a writ petition filed against the decision of EC that said there is no scope to scrape the candidacy of 25 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders who are contesting the parliamentary election despite cancellation of the party’s registration.

Barrister Tania Amir on behalf of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation on Wednesday filed the petition with the concerned department of the High Court (HC).

Earlier on December 23, the EC quashed the appeal for the cancellation of the candidature of 25 Jamaat-i-Islami candidates and permitted them to contest the polls.

On December 18, the HC directed the EC to dispose of the application filed for cancelling the candidacy of 25 Jamaat-e-Islami men within three working days.
