HC verdict on Maya’s appeal deferred

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has deferred its verdict on the appeal filed by Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya against his conviction and sentencing in a graft case.

An HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order on Sunday.

The court has fixed Monday (October 8) for delivering judgement on the appeal.

Earlier, the court fixed October 7 for delivering judgement on the appeal filed by Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya against his conviction and sentencing in a graft case.

A special court on February 14, 2008, convicted Maya and sentenced him to 13 years in jail, fined him Tk 5 crore, and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his “ill-gotten” wealth.

He was acquitted by the HC on October 27, 2010.

In 2011, the ACC filed the petition for permission to appeal against the HCverdict.

On June 14, 2015, the Supreme Court had cancelled a prior High Court verdict that had acquitted Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from the corruption charges that landed him in 13 years of jail time.
