Hailstorm damages huge crops, houses in Nilphamari

Nilphamari Correspondent: Hailstorm coupled with rain left different crops on vast tracts of land damaged in Domar and Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district on Friday.

The violent storm, started around 9:30am and lasted for about 30 minutes, also left around 50 people injured, damaged huge crops like mango, lichi, tobacco and miaize and nearly 15,000 tin-shed houses.

Witness Robiul Alam and Abu Ahmed, both are residents of Thatariparha area of Domar upazila, said, “The storm accompanied with hails made leakages of most of the tin-shed house of the area. Several people were also injured by hails.”

They also named several of the injured as Azahar Ali, Mominur Rahman, Aminur Rahman, Majida, Tosimoddin and Saifun.

Sexagenarian woman Saifun Nahar said, “I never saw so much hail in my life. Some hails were seen like pumpkin.”

Asadudaula Chowdhury, head master of Ketkibarhi High School, said, “Tin roof of our school was leaked by hailstorm, flooding the rooms. School was declared on leave immediately.”

Ekramul Haque, Chairman of Bhogdaburhi Union Parishad, said, “The storm with hails damaged at least 5,000 tin roofs in my union.

Khaled Rahim, Nilphamari administrator, said, “Blankets, shares and dried food were distributed among the victims after the hailstorm.”

“Extent of damages could not be known immediately. Relief goods will be distributed after preparing list of victims,” he added.
