High Court increases Khaleda’s jail term to 10 years

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has increased the jail term of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to 10 years in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The bench comprising of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict on Tuesday morning on two appeal petitions filed over judgement in the graft case.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while no lawyer was present for Khaleda Zia in the court.

The Special Court-5 in Dhaka sentenced BNP chief Khaleda Zia to 5-year imprisonment in the case on February 08. Since, she has been in the Old-Dhaka central jail on Nazimuddin Road in the capital. Later, she was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in line with court order.

Khaleda Zia filed a petition against verdict, seeking acquittal in the case. On the other hand, ACC filed another petition against verdict, seeking increase of punishment in the case.

Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was also sentenced to 7-year imprisonment in Zia Charritable Trust graft case on Monday (October 29).
