Home minister warns of tough action against drug peddlers

Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal warned of taking tough action against the culprits who are still doing the drug trading.

The minister made the warning at a time when 102 drug peddlers surrendered to police in presence of him on Teknaf Pilot High School premises of Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.

Asaduzzaman said, “Bangladesh is now a prohibited area for those who are involved in drug dealings. The government will remain rigid to root out drugs from the country. No one will be spared in this regard.”

He urged the active drug traffickers to surrender before the law enforcement agencies as none will go impunity.

The minister said Bangladesh asked Myanmar government in several times to stop Yaba smuggling, but they would not response to our request.

“So, the government has decided to protect our borders as the Yaba tablets is being smuggled into Bangladesh through 193 points of our boarders including Ukhia and Teknaf,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Javed Patwary said the traffickers submitted 30-kg of yaba tablets and 30 weapons as a symbol of the surrender in exchange for flowers.

Citing allegations made against a few members of law enforcers, the IGP also issued a warning saying, “If any member of law enforcing agencies is found involved in this connection, the ministry will go for stern action.”

The IGP also assured to give legal support to those who turned themselves into police custody.

“We will try to complete their cases within the shortest possible time,” the IGP added.

Of the 102 yaba peddlers, including 35 people, who are named as ‘godfathers’ on the government’s anti-narcotics list surrendered to police seeking a return to regular life.
