It was clerical error: BB

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh Bank (BB) Executive Director Md. Rabiul Hossain said the report published in a national daily that mentioned irregularities of gold measurement in BB vault has been prepared based on the clerical error.

He made the remarks at a press conference held in Jahangir Alam conference hall of BB around 5:00pm on Tuesday.

The BB official said, "It's a clerical error. The purity of the gold kept by the customs detectives was 40 percent, but it was recorded 80 percent due to the similarity between the number 4 in Bangla and 8 in English which caused confusion."

There is no scope of losing gold stored in the BB vault, Rabiul Hossain said.

He claimed that the allegation of gold missing is not true as the stored gold in the vault is highly secured and there is no chance of any mismanagement.

“The report on this matter published by Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) published is their own. Bangladesh Bank has no connection with the report because the machine National Board of Revenue (NBR) uses to measure gold differs from the machine of BB. There is doubt about the fitness of NBR machine,” he said.

The executive director also said that application for a third party measurement of the gold has been filed.

The press conference was called to make a response to the report published in a national daily this morning that mentioned irregularities of gold measurement in BB vault.
