JS passes Narcotics Control Bill, 2018

Parliament Correspondent: The Narcotics Control Bill, 2018 has been passed in the Jatiya Sangsad in an amended form with a view to controlling the abuse of the drugs that posing serious health hazard for the people.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Saturday moved the bill in the House which was unanimously passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Placing the bill, the minister said the proposed bill will replace the Narcotics Control Act, 2004 in order to comply with the three international conventions.

The draft of the proposed bill was approved by the cabinet meeting on September 08 in 2018 in principle.

Introducing the bill, the Home Minister said “ in recent times, the use of Yaba, a kind of narcotics, has increased in the country aggressively and most of the youths are addicted with this drugs that creating serious health hazards for the people.”

The existing act is creating serious legal complications as the existing act has no provision to bring the drug traders, patrons and the investors under book which is needed to make the country free from drugs, according to the proposed bill.

Earlier, the Narcotics Control Bill, 2018 was placed in the parliament and then it was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on October 22 for providing report after further scrutiny.
