Juba League man shot dead in Mymensingh

Staff Correspondent, Mymensingh: An activist of Juba League (JL), one of the ruling party affiliates, was shot to death by rivals in Mymensingh town on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was known as Sazzad Alam Sheikh Azad alias Azad Sheikh, 40.

The incident took place at Akua area of the district town over establishing supremacy in the area.

According to Police and local sources, there had been a clash between two rival groups of Sheikh Azad and Sheikh Farid for two months over establishing supremacy in the area.

As a sequal to that around 11:30am on Tuesday, supporters of the two groups locked in to a clash with lethal weapons and firearms. People of both groups fired shells and blasted crude bombs on each other. Being, police rushed to the spot, but people of both groups continued their dispute. At one stage around 3:00pm, rival people shot and chopped Sheikh Azad near his residence of Akua Habun area, leaving him critically injured. He was whisked off to Mymenshing Medical College and Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.

After spreading out the news of Sheikh Azad’s death, his supporters made showdown at different places of the area and set fire at a Bakery shop of a relative of Sheikh Farid. They also set two buses ablaze and vandalised a battery -run auto-rickshaw (easy-bike).

Syed Nurul Islam, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Mymensingh, said supporters of two rival groups had been locked in clash for last several days. Four people were held for their suspected involvement in Tuesday’s incident.

Khandokar Shaker, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of the Kotwali Model Police Station, said Sheikh Azad was accused in 12 cases filed over arms, clash and theft. He was a listed terror.
