Leg losing girl in road crash: Bus driver remanded

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Shafikul Islam Munna, driver of a BRTC bus, on a one-day remand in connection with a case filed over losing a leg of a teenage girl in a road accident that took place on Airport Road in the capital’s Banani area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order after Sub-Inspector (SI) of Banani Police station Mizanur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court, seeking a seven-day remand for him.

Yesterday, an Uttara-bound BRTC bus from Mohakhali hit Rozina Akhter, 16, while she was crossing the road in Chairmanbari area around 8:30pm. The right leg of the victim got severed from her thigh following the accident.

After the accident, she was rushed to the National Institute of Traumatology an Orthopedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), better known as Pangu Hospital, immediately. Police detained the bus along with its driver soon after the incident.

Talking to reporters at the Hospital, Rozina said she has been working at a journalist’s house in Niketon area.  She went to Amtola area near Chairmanbari on Friday to visit one of her friends.

When she was about to cross the road the rear wheel of the BRTC bus ran over her, Rozina said. Daughter of Rasul Mia, Rozina hails from Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh.

A case was filed with Banani Police Station in this connection.

Earlier, Khalid Hasan Hridoy, 19, a student of class-X, lost his hand on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj on Tuesday, barely two weeks after Titumir College student Rajib Hossain lost his right hand in a similar accident in Dhaka on April 3 and later passed away on April 17.
