Let NCC polls be held in festive mood

Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) election is scheduled to be held on December 22. All types of meetings, processions and rallies have been banned in the polling area from today midnight to Saturday midnight (December 24). The outsiders staying here have been asked to leave the polling area by today midnight.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed visited Narayanganj on December 15 in a bid to hold a free and fair election. He exchanged his views with the election candidates in Narayanganj club. At that time, he assured them of a free and fair election. The candidates expressed doubt about the upcoming election although the chief election commissioner delivered a very constructive and optimistic speech in this regard. Many of the election candidates alleged that supporters of the rival candidates are intimidating them.

The ruling Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy, also former mayor, is contesting for Narayanganj City Corporation election. Expressing doubt about a fair election, she said a third side can create awkward incident in the election. On the other hand, BNP-backed mayoral candidate Shakhawat Hossain Khan is contesting the election as the key opponent against Ivy. Shakhawat Hossain stressed for the army deployment in the election, expressing doubt about a free, fair and neutral election. He also alleged that equal chances and opportunities have not ensured for all candidates in the election.

Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) ruled out the possibility of deploying army. But the EC said all types of measures have been taken to ensure a free and fair election. Necessary steps have been completed for voting. A huge number of members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the polling area to ensure security.

Narayanganj City Corporation election has brought a chance for two major political parties to justify their popularity in the existing political situation of the country. Especially BNP announced to boycott elections to Dhaka North and South City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation bringing allegations of vote rigging in the middle of the voting. But it was found that the party candidates got a considerable number of votes after counting.

Jatiya Party (JP) has already extended its support to the ruling Awami League-backed mayoral candidate for Narayanganj City Corporation election Selina Hayat Ivy. Candidates are passing their busy time for the last-minute campaigning. We expect that the election will be held in a peaceful and festive atmosphere.
