MPs can run campaign in city polls

Staff Correspondent: Lawmakers-- popularly known as members of parliament (MP)-- can run campaign in city corporation polls, said Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed.

He came up with the disclosure after a meeting on “Amendment of City Corporation Election Conduct Rules” held at Election Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Thursday noon.

EC secretary said, “MP post has been omitted from very important position as it is not profitable. So, proposals were made for allowing them to run campaign in city corporation polls. But they will not be able use the government circuit house. Now the proposal will be sent to the Law Ministry for vetting.”

“Besides, 11 more proposals were placed in the existing City Corporation Election Conduct Rules,” he added.

When asked, Helal Uddin said it was only passed in the commission meeting. Now it will be sent to the Ministry for vetting. So, there are a few scopes to get chances of it in Gazipur city polls.
