Massive efforts, awareness needed to prevent Chikungunya

The number of Chikungunya affected people have been increased day by day across the country including the capital Dhaka. A large number of people are severely suffering from this viral disease.

The matter of panic is that if any member of a family becomes affected with this virus, the others are also feared to be affected. Because, a mosquito may spread the virus to others if it bites a person already affected.

Chikungunya is the name of a mosquito-borne virus. The Aedes mosquitoes, which bear dengue virus, carry the Chikungunya virus.

The symptom of this disease is fever with too much temperature. The fever with shivering may rise to the temperature of 104 to 105 Degree Celsius or above, along with severe pain and nausea.

Other common signs and symptoms include muscle pain, joint pain, headache, fatigue and rash. Though the fever lasts for 2 to 3 days, the pain may be prolonged to a month or above.

No vaccine or antidote has yet been invented to prevent the chikungunya. So, we need to build resistance before remedy. For this, all of us should be aware of this. As Aedes are responsible for this virus, we firstly have to stay away from mosquito bites. We should urgently take effective steps to eradicate mosquitoes. Along with the government management, to increase social awareness is also needed to fight the crisis.

There are no specific remedies for this disease. Treatment is prescribed by the symptoms. In rainy season, frequent rains accumulate water in tubs on roofs and balconies of many houses. Aedes mosquitoes breed there. Besides, these mosquitoes also breed in stagnant pools of clean water.

So, we should keep clean roofs and the premises of houses. We should aware of that water cannot accumulate at any place for more than three days. We should ensure of no accumulation of water under refrigerators.

Aedes mosquitoes usually bite on days. So, we need to use mosquito net while day sleeping. Spray can also be used to kill mosquitoes. Children should be accustomed to use full pants in spite of shorts. If anybody becomes affected with this disease, he/she should be taken to physicians immediately.

To prevent spreading of chikungunya, City Corporations should disperse mosquito medicines. Mosquito elimination activities of the two city corporations of Dhaka (Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation) have already been questioned. To survive from Chikunguniyya, two city corporations should be more active in killing mosquitoes so that Aedes cannot breed.

Massive efforts are needed to prevent reproduction of this mosquito and to resist the viral disease. The government, health ministry and all the organisations including the media should work together with this goal.
