‘My resignation won’t solve problem’

Senior Correspondent: In response to a call of his resignation, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said his resignation will not solve any problem related to road crash that killed two students on Airport Road on July 29.

“I have no problem to resign if that would solve the problem and actually diminish road accidents. But, it is not a solution to problems,” said Shajahan Khan, also the Executive President of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation.

The minister came up with the response to reporters at the secretariat on Monday in response to students’ demand of his resignation.

Shajahan said he will definitely quit if his resignation helps resolve the problem. “But everyone should keep in mind the progress I’ve so far made from my position.”

Earlier in the day, students of different schools and colleges in the city blocked Airport road demanding justice.

Earlier on Sunday, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College -- Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib -- were killed as a Kabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital at Airport Road.

A case was filed on Sunday night over the incident and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two drivers and two helpers of three buses from different parts of the capital on Monday.
