Needed to stand by victims

A vast area of the country has been flooded due to incessant rain and onrush of water from upstream. Different places of Moulavibazar sadar went under water as flood control dams on Monu and Dholai river were damaged.

More than a hundred villages of Rajnagar, Kulaura and Komolganj of the district washed away as water of the two rivers crossed the danger limit and broke the embankment, leaving more than a lakh people marooned.

A huge amount of rice damaged as water of Monu river entered in four government godowns of sadar upazila. Many of houses, establishments, educational institutions and road still remain under water.

According to news published in media, flood situation worsened in Osmaninagar and Jakiganj upazila in Sylhet. Some 10 villages of Osmaninagar went under water of Kushiara river, isolating road communication as a culvert damaged at Sayedpur village of the upazila.

Meanwhile water is rising in Teesta and Jamuna rivers due to the onrush from the upstream across the border. Water flowing has also been worsened due to heavy rain at Hatibandha of Lalmonirhat.

At least 24 villages also went under water as embankments of Feni’s Muhuri river damaged in eight points, causing Eid joys faded in the area.

Hundreds of fish enclosures and crop lands flooded as embankment damaged in Ashashuni of Satkhira, leaving a number of people marooned.

Anxiety gripped people as flood happened in advance at different places of the country. People are panicked by the flood.

Though people are always helpless before different natural calamities like heavy rain, storm and flow tide, but steps should be taken to avoid unwanted situation. It also needs to stand by victims. The administration should also take initiatives for flood affected people.

It should also be assured to open shelter centres and to distribute reliefs and cash money among victims. It is also needed to take effective steps for agro rehabilitation after flood.

Safe water and dry foods should be served to marooned people of remote areas. Damaged establishments, educational institutions, roads should also be reconstructed as soon as possible. As flood happens nearly every year, preparations are needed to avoid much sufferings. For this, short, medium and long-term plans are needed. It also needs to dredge rivers to reduce outbreak of flood.
