New bench formed for hearing over Khaleda’s candidacy

Staff Correspondent: Chief Justice (CJ) Syed Mahmud Hossain has formed a new bench to dispose the writ petition filed over BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s candidature.

CJ assigned the bench of Justice JBM Hassan to settle the writ on Wednesday.

M Saifur Rahman, special officer of the Supreme Court (SC), confirmed the news.

On Tuesday, Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, senior judge of the HC bench, wanted to direct the EC to accept Khaleda's nominations and allow her to contest the December 30 polls.

He also wanted to issue a rule on the EC asking it to explain why its decision on Khaleda's nominations should not be declared illegal.

However, Justice Md Iqbal Kabir Lytton, junior judge of the bench, disagreed on the senior judge's order.

According to rules, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain is to assign another HC bench to hear and dispose of Khaleda's three writ petitions for competition in Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 in the 11th general election.
