Nusrat murder: PBI to press charges against 16

Staff Correspondent: Investigators have finalised the charges against 16 people including Feni madrasa Principal Siraj Ud Doula and two local Awami League leaders over the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) will press charges against them before the court on Wednesday.

PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar said this at a press conference at its office at Dhanmondi in the city on Tuesday.

During long investigation, they found the involvement of 16 people in the arson attack on the madrasa girl that led to her death, he said.

Death sentence has been sought in the final charge sheet for the 16 accused, he said.

Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s ex-principal Siraj Ud Doula, who reportedly sexually harassed her, has been made prime accused in the charge sheet.

Of the 16 accused, 12 have already given their confessional statement before magistrate, he said.

The PBI chief said a total of 92 people have been made witnesses in the case and seven of them have already testified before the court.

On April 6, Nusrat was set afire at an examination centre allegedly by people loyal to the principal of her madrasa after he was arrested and subsequently suspended as she had accused him of sexually harassing her in Sonagaziupazila of Feni district.

She lost her battle for life on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital.
