One killed in Meherpur 'gunfight'

Meherpur Correspondent: A man was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Nurpur village of the district's sadar upazila on Monday late night.

The deceased was identified as Firatul Islam, 44, son of Ayub Ali of Pirojpur village of the same upazila.

Five police men were also injured in the incident. They were given first aid at Meherpur General Hospital.

Firatul was involved in terror activities, police claimed.

Ahsan Habib, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Meherpur Circle, said a suspected group of miscreants were staying at jackfruit garden of Ashraful Islam at Nurpur village. They fired at cops when they reached there. Police also retaliated for self-defence that triggered a gun battle.

"Police, later, along with locals recovered a body from the spot. One of the locals identified the body as Firatul of Pirojpur village, he added.

Law enforcers also seized an LG Shutter gun, five rounds of bullet, five cocktails and three machetes from the spot, he said.

Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, said Firatul was a branded miscreant and robber.

"He was accused in at least 10 cases of murder, robbery, explosive cases filed with Meherpur Sadar and Mujibnagar police stations.
