Pakna, Shonir haors flooded as dam breaks

Sylhet Correspondent: Another area in Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj inundated after dam breaks at different points on the embankment of Paknar Haor.

Earlier, two embankments circling the Shonir Haor have fallen apart. And the Urar Bondho dam at Paknar haor in Jamalganj and Dirai upazilas of Sunamganj breached at various points early Monday.

Sources said that the villagers tried to protect the embankments, but finally failed.

Fenarbak union parishad secretary Ajit Kumar Roy said that more than hundred workers tried to save the dam. Besides, 50 more guards were deployed there. But, some cracks appeared at different points on the embankment of Paknar Haor last night.

Heavy rain and onrush of hill water has worsened the situation in Shonir Haor, the second largest water body in the district. Boro paddy in 8,000 hectares of land in Shonir Haor went under water.
